How to Determine your Lanyard Length

I am often asked by customers how to determine the length they need for their lanyards. And since I am probably one of only a few Etsy sellers who sell lanyards with the option to select a length, I feel that this is a very good question that should be addressed. And where better to write about than on my blog? 😊

I have researched lanyard lengths and what is considered to be the “standard” (or common or average) length and I have found that that there really isn’t a standard length for lanyards. I have read and seen lanyard lengths anywhere from 28 inches up to 38 or longer lengths. So I decided to come up with my own standard/average length- around 32 to 34 inches. But there are so many other factors to consider when choosing the appropriate length, including your body type/frame and your preference. Some people like their lanyards short and some like them long. If you’re petite and 5 foot tall, for example, you will probably want to go with a 28-inch or 30-inch lanyard. If you’re taller and/or big boned (like myself), you may want to go with a longer length like 36 or 38 inches.

Please Note:  If you want to be able to wear your Swarovski pearl lanyard as a choker, as shown in last picture above, you may want to choose a longer length to be able to wrap around your neck twice.

If you’re still uncertain or you or purchasing a lanyard for someone else, you will probably need to do some simple measuring. Even measuring for yourself will give you a better idea of what length to get for your friend, family member, coworker, etc. Once you figure out the length that would work for you, then you can use that measurement to help you determine what length will be best for your friend.

In all of my lanyard listings in my Etsy lanyard shop http://www.thelanyardnecklace.etsy.com, under the Item Details or Item Description (depending on which method you are viewing Etsy- on the full website, mobile website, Etsy app, etc.), I provide detailed instructions on how to determine (or measure) the length you need. Below is an example of what I show in my lanyard listings on Etsy:

LENGTH:
Please select the length you prefer. The standard/average length for lanyards is around 32-34 inches.

Two ways to figure out what length you need- measure a current lanyard you have from end to end, OR wrap a piece of string, cord, ribbon, etc. (or measuring tape), around your neck, bring the ends together to where you want your lanyard to lay, and measure that distance. Length does not include badge clip.

I hope these tips help you when you are trying to determine the length you need when purchasing one of my beaded or chain lanyards. But, as always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. 😊
